That's the question we get asked most often. Catamaran or yacht? And the answer is almost always another question: what exactly do you want to do?

It's not a matter of prestige. Between renting a catamaran on the French Riviera and renting a motor yacht, the two formats coexist for very different uses. Understanding what each does well, and what it does less well, is choosing the right day before even getting on board.

What the catamaran does best

A catamaran is first and foremost a platform. Two hulls connected by a generous deck, a wide cockpit, living spaces that rival those of a villa terrace. When anchored in a bay, a catamaran barely moves. The two hulls absorb the sea's movements. You can eat, relax, and spend the day on the water without feeling the swell.

That's why the catamaran is the preferred format for groups who want to drop anchor and stay. A family birthday, a team lunch, a collective relaxation day without a specific plan: the catamaran transforms the sea into an outdoor living room. For equivalent size, no motor yacht offers as much living space as a catamaran. And above all, the capacity is in another league: where a day boat tops out at 11 or 12 passengers, a similarly sized catamaran can accommodate 15 to 20.

Stability also has a direct impact on the comfort of people less accustomed to the sea. On a catamaran, people prone to seasickness are generally much more comfortable. The roll is usually much more limited than on a motor yacht.

What the yacht does best

A motor yacht, a day boat like the From Antonio D42 or its equivalents, operates on an opposing logic: covering distance, accessing spots that other boats cannot reach, and returning on schedule. At 35 or 40 knots, Nice is 45 minutes from Cannes. Cap Ferrat is accessible for a morning swim. Antibes and its coves can be visited in a morning.

The draft of a motor yacht is generally much shallower than that of a catamaran. From Antonio, For example, it only draws 60 centimeters. This allows you to get close to the inlets of Cap d'Antibes, the shallow coves around the Lérins Islands, and areas that larger vessels cannot reach. The catamaran, despite its shallow draft, is wide, and this width can be a problem in narrow coves.

For people who love the feeling of sailing, acceleration, speed, and responsiveness at the helm, the motor yacht is unparalleled. It's a driving experience. The catamaran, on the other hand, glides slowly and silently. These are two very different emotions.

The question of the group and the program

For a group of 6 to 10 people who want a relaxed day with little sailing and lots of swimming, a catamaran is almost always the best choice. It offers more space per person, more areas to settle in, and a comfort at anchor that radically changes the experience.

For a group of 4 to 8 people who want to see several spots in one day, pass by Monaco, cruise along Cap Ferrat, visit a cove, and return before dinner, a motor yacht will be much more suitable. A catamaran allows for more time to enjoy one or two anchorages. A motor yacht allows for visiting multiple areas in the same day.

The size of the group is often the deciding factor. Motor yachts are usually limited to a maximum of 11 or 12 passengers. A catamaran like the Galathea 65 can accommodate up to 20 people during the day. For groups of 15 to 20 people, the catamaran is not just one option among others; it is the only option. For corporate events or very large groups, certain event catamarans, such as the Day One 70, can accommodate over 140 guests.

The image that everyone projects

The catamaran provides a feeling of a floating villa: space, slowness, and presence on the water. The motor yacht provides a feeling of mobility and performance: trajectory, speed, and the freedom to change locations along the way. Clients who dream of lunch at anchor facing Cap d'Antibes often choose the catamaran. Those who imagine a day cruising along the coast and discovering several areas generally choose the motor yacht. Both images are accurate. Both days are real.

The catamaran day

Departure from Cannes around 10 am. Gentle navigation towards the Lérins Islands, 20-minute crossing. Mooring in the bay of Saint-Honorat or in front of Sainte-Marguerite. Swimming, lunch on board, nap on the front net. Swim in the late afternoon. Return to Cannes around 6 pm. No specific plan. No need for one.

Motor yacht day

Departure from Golfe-Juan at 9 am. Cap d'Antibes at 9:30 am, swim in a cove inaccessible by road. Head for Nice at 11 am, passing in front of the Promenade des Anglais. Villefranche at 12:30 pm, anchor in the bay, lunch. Cap Ferrat along the east coast. Return towards Cannes from the west at 4 pm. Four territories, one day.

These two days are not comparable. They do not meet the same expectations. Choosing between a catamaran and a yacht means choosing between these two days.

Our concrete response

On our fleet, the catamarans available for rent go from Fountaine Pajot Elba 45, ideal for a day with family or friends with remarkable comfort, up to Day One 70, a 21-meter catamaran with living spaces that completely change the nature of the day.

If you're still hesitating, the question to ask yourself is simple: do I want to explore the coast, or do I want to settle somewhere and stay there? The answer almost always dictates the format.

FAQ – Catamaran or Yacht on the French Riviera

What is the main difference between a catamaran and a motor yacht?

A catamaran offers more space, exceptional stability at anchor, and superior onboard living comfort, but it is slower and less maneuverable in tight areas. A motor yacht is much faster, can access shallow coves, and is better suited for an active cruising program. The choice depends on the type of day: drop anchor and enjoy, or cover distance and explore.

Is a catamaran better for people prone to seasickness?

Yes, generally. A catamaran is generally much more stable than a motor yacht of comparable size because its two hulls absorb the movement of the waves without heeling. Roll is generally much more limited than on a motor yacht. For people not accustomed to the sea or prone to seasickness, a catamaran is almost always the most comfortable option.

What format to choose depending on the group size?

Below 8 people, both formats are viable. Between 8 and 12, a motor yacht like the De Antonio D42 is at its comfort limit, while a catamaran like the Elba 45 remains spacious. Above 12 people, the catamaran becomes essential: the Galathea 65 can accommodate up to 20 passengers during the day, and the Day One 70 up to 146 for event-style use. Motorized day boats are capped at a maximum of 11-12 passengers, regardless of boat size.

Can you access the coves of Cap d'Antibes with a catamaran?

Some coves, yes, others no. Catamarans have a shallow draft, but their hull width (7 to 8 meters for a 45-foot) can prevent access to the narrowest coves. A compact motor yacht, with a draft of 60 centimeters, will have access to areas a catamaran cannot reach. If the coves of Cap are a priority, an agile motor yacht will be more suitable.

What budget should be planned for a catamaran or yacht on the French Riviera?

On our fleet, day-trip catamarans start around 3,600 euros for a Fontaine Pajot Elba 45, and go up to 7,500 euros and more for 20-meter units and larger. The price includes skipper, fuel, and equipment depending on the boat. Contact us for availability and a precise quote based on your date and group.
