In the Côte d’Azur, winter doesn’t freeze the boats. That’s exactly what leads many owners to underestimate it.
Here, there is no ice in the circuits or snow on the bridge. The real risk is elsewhere: the east winds that strain the moorings, the humidity that settles in the closed cabins, the batteries that drain without a sound, and above all a boat that no one looks at for five months.
A successful wintering on the Riviera does not consist of «closing the boat». It consists of preparing it, monitoring it, and returning it to service in time for the season. In this guide, we review the choice between wintering afloat and on land, the actual cost factors, the checklist to follow, and what happens between November and April.

On the water or on land: which wintering option to choose on the Côte d’Azur?
On the Côte d’Azur, many motorboats spend the winter at sea. That makes sense: the climate is mild, the berth in the marina is already paid for for the year, and the boat remains available for a day trip in good weather in February. But this isn’t always the best choice.
| Wintering with the current | Wintering on land | |
|---|---|---|
| For whom | Boat with annual space, without major work planned | Boat with hullwork, hullwork repairs or propeller shafts to be done |
| Advantages | No handling required, boat usable in winter, technical support made easier | Dry deck, full access to the live works, no risk associated with the moorings |
| Points of attention | Anchors and fenders during gusts of wind, hull dirt, essential surveillance | Cost of water and berth fees; limited spaces on the construction sites; boat exposed to the sun and dust |
| Cost | Included in the annual fee (excluding supervision) | Handling and parking on the construction site, in addition to the floating space if it is preserved |
Our reading ground: For a day boat or yacht of 10 to 20 meters that sails in the summer between Cannes, Antibes and Saint-Tropez, wintering afloat with regular surveillance is often the right option. It is then combined with a short water outing in the spring for the keel overhaul. However, a prolonged land stay may be preferable depending on the size of the boat, its engine, the planned work, and the available parking conditions.
Also pay attention to the insurance: some contracts impose specific conditions for a boat left unattended during the winter. It is advisable to check before closing the boat.
How much does it cost to winterize a boat on the Côte d’Azur?
There is no single price: the bill depends on the length of the boat, the port, the number of engines and what is entrusted to a professional. The most useful approach is to consider the costs per item.
| Post | What it covers | How it is billed |
|---|---|---|
| Time for the port | Parking by the river from November to April | Generally included in the annual contract, otherwise a winter package according to the port |
| Out of the water and ashore | Lifting, positioning, parking on the construction site, return to the water | By the meter, depending on the construction site |
| Wintering engines | Drainage, filters, anodes, cooling circuit protection | By engine, at the discretion of the motor manufacturer |
| Fairing | High-pressure cleaning, antifouling, anodes | The more paint per meter, the better |
| Surveillance and maintenance | Regular visits, inspection of the moorings, aeration, batteries, cleaning | Monthly package for the foot or the visit |
| Winter work | Upholstery, teak, electronics, repairs | Upon request |
Clapi Boats landmark: Our winter management formula starts at 15 € HT per foot and per month. It includes a technical inspection every month (levels, batteries, circuits and equipment), an interior and exterior cleaning, and coordination with our partner technicians. Additional visits, specialized interventions, parts and repairs are quoted on a quote basis.
The most expensive item never appears on a winter maintenance bill. It was the breakdown discovered in May, at a time when the boat was scheduled to depart for rental or family use.
The winter checklist, step by step
This list applies to a motorboat that floats in winter. These are checkpoints that must be adapted to the boat, its engine, and the manufacturer’s recommendations: most of them are handled by an engine fitter. For a landing, the adjustment to an appropriate berthing location and the protection of the hull are also required.
Engines and generator
- Oil change and filter replacement (oil, diesel fuel, separator)
- Cooling circuit: rinsing and protection according to the motor manufacturer's procedure
- Inspection of the sea water pump turbine and the pulleys
- Replacement of the engine anodes if they are worn out
- Fuel: tank level and possible treatment according to the manufacturer's recommendations
Circuits and electricity
- Freshwater circuit and water heater: emptying or treatment according to the installation and the method of conservation
- Cleaning and rinsing of the black water tank
- Batteries charged and circuits cut off according to the installation, keeping the permanent circuits (propulsion pumps, alarms) powered.
- Testing of automatic bilge pumps and their floats
Bridge and exterior
- Double locks, anti-loosening sleeves, shock absorbers on the bars
- Number of fenders sufficient on the pontoon side
- Tied tent or tarpaulin well, without any wind resistance
- Cushions, bimini and upholstery dismantled and stored dry
- Marine toys and accessories stored or placed on the ground
Interior
- Refrigerators emptied, cleaned and left open
- Dehumidifiers or moisture absorbers in each cabin
- Mattresses raised to allow air to circulate
- Electronics and valuables offloaded
A large part of these operations requires a mechanic or technician. It is better to book them early: in November, the schedules of the construction sites in Cannes and Antibes fill up quickly.
During the winter: surveillance makes all the difference
Most of the bad winter surprises don’t come from poor preparation. They come from a problem that has taken hold without anyone noticing: a mooring that wears out against the dock after a gust of wind, a bilge pump that runs continuously, a flat battery, mold in a closed cabin.
Serious follow-up relies on three reflexes:
- A visit after every episode of strong wind, To check the moorings, fenders and bow thruster.
- Regular technical visits, With control of levels, batteries, circuits and equipment, and ventilation of the boat. The engines and the generator are put into operation when their maintenance procedure so requires, under suitable conditions.
- A report to the owner, With photos, to see where the boat is at without having to travel.
In the Côte d’Azur, the frequency of visits is not enough on its own. A period of strong winds or heavy rainfall may require an additional visit outside the usual schedule. It is in these moments that a local contact person comes into his or her own: checking the moorings, checking the bilge pumps, repositioning a bilge pump or quickly reporting an anomaly to the owner.

Return to service: not waiting until May
In the Côte d’Azur, the season starts earlier than one might think. The first outings begin as early as spring, while events like the Cannes Film Festival create additional demand for boats available for rental. A boat that must be ready for these dates is prepared as early as March: hull painting, engine checks, upholstery reassembly, sea trials.
The right calendar:
- February: work estimate and booking of the water discharge slot.
- Mars: hull, antifouling, engine overhaul.
- April: Complete cleaning, equipment reassembly, sea trials.
- May: boat ready for the season and the first events.
Winter is the right time to prepare for a rental season
For a boat owner who plans to rent out their boat next summer, winterization is the ideal time to prepare for it. Upgrading work is done off-season, photos and the boat profile are prepared in peace and quiet, and the boat can be marketed as early as January, when international clients book their dates.
Waiting for spring means arriving after the first reservations for the Cannes Film Festival, the Grand Prix of Monaco, or the weeks of July and August.

FAQ
When should you winterize your boat on the Côte d’Azur?
Generally between the end of October and the end of November, once the last season has been completed. The main thing is to book a motorhome and a campsite before the rush of November.
Can you leave your boat in the water all winter?
Yes, it is a common practice in the Mediterranean, provided that the port is well protected and that the boat is visited regularly, especially after storms.
Should engines be run during the winter?
Not systematically. The need to keep the engines running during the winter depends on their type, the manufacturer’s recommendations, and the winterization procedure chosen. Short and repeated starts do not replace proper maintenance.
Should the boat be taken out of the water for the keel fitting?
Yes, in the Mediterranean, the hull is built outside the water, on a prepared hulling area. It is generally planned in the spring, before the ship is put back into service.
I am not there in the winter, how can I track my boat?
By entrusting the surveillance to a local manager who conducts the visits, coordinates the technicians, and sends you a report after each visit.
