At the end of September, Port Hercule ceases to operate as a port. For four days, Monaco concentrates more superyachts in a single basin than most countries have along their entire coastline. This is the equation that the Monaco Yacht Show has been solving every year since 1991: fitting the world's largest concentration of superyachts into one of the most constrained ports in the Mediterranean.<\/p>\n
This isn't a boat show in the traditional sense. To board, negotiate, or view the units, you need accreditation, which is issued to professionals, qualified owners, and brokers. Others remain on the outer docks. Or, even better, they set sail.<\/p>\n

Monaco is hosting the world's leading superyacht show today. This is no geographical coincidence. The Grimaldi family, which has ruled the Principality since 1297, originally hails from Genoa, one of the great maritime powers of the medieval Mediterranean. Fran\u00e7ois Grimaldi seized the Rock in 1297 disguised as a monk, but the family was originally deeply connected to the sea: merchants, shipowners, and Genoese privateers.<\/p>\n
Long before the Monaco Yacht Show, Monaco had already built a global image around its casino, its winter Riviera, and later the Grand Prix created in 1929. But the sea never left the heart of the Principality. Port Hercule remains one of the few natural deep-water harbors on this stretch of coast, a strategic shelter used since antiquity.<\/p>\n
When the Monaco Yacht Show was created in 1991, it did not create a new identity; it extended an already long history. That of a tiny principality that has always lived looking towards the sea, and which, at the end of the 20th century, naturally became one of the global centers of prestigious yachting.<\/p>\n
The Monaco Yacht Show is not a public exhibition. It's not a boat show. It's not an event where people come to look at boats and dream. It's a commercial tool: for four days, shipyards from around the world, L\u00fcrssen, Feadship, Benetti, Azimut, Sunseeker, present their new constructions to a targeted clientele. The boats on display are either new for sale or available for brokerage. Some are available for charter.<\/p>\n
The total value of the boats on display in 2024 exceeded four billion euros. At this scale, we're no longer really talking about leisure boating. Brokers, wealth managers, superyacht captains, crews, designers: an entire industry congregates in Port Hercule at the end of September. For the sector, it's the most significant professional event of the year.<\/p>\n

Port Hercule is physically small. The Principality of Monaco measures 2 km\u00b2 in total, the smallest international sovereignty with a coastline. When 120 superyachts dock there, some bow-in, some on offshore moorings beyond the harbor, the port changes nature. There is no empty space left. Masts line up above the city. Hulls spill out to the edges of the basin.<\/p>\n
It is from the sea that this density becomes legible. From the inner quay, you can see the sides of the boats, the gangways, the crews at work. From a boat offshore, you can see the whole, the complete profile of Port Hercule during the show, the 120 hulls lined up with the Rock, the casino, and the buildings of the Principality as a backdrop. A view that the show itself does not allow.<\/p>\n
Access to Port Hercules during the Monaco Yacht Show is regulated: transient boats are redirected, and spaces are reserved for exhibitors. However, the outer waters remain open. A boat that sails along Monaco from the east, from Cap Martin or Menton, or from the west, from Villefranche or Nice, can view the entire show from offshore.<\/p>\n
Against all odds, this is the best available spot. The perspective from offshore gives the true scale of the event. An 80-meter yacht moored in Port Hercules can only be seen in its true proportions from the sea; from the quay, it's too close, too big, too fragmented. From a boat 200 meters from the outer buoys, it falls back into place within the scenery.<\/p>\n
